Full list of Oscars won:

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (RUSSELL CROWE)

– What else was nominated?

Before Night Falls – Javier Bardem
Cast Away – Tom Hanks
Pollock – Ed Harris
Quills – Geoffrey Rush

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

Haven’t seen any except Gladiator (of course).

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Russell Crowe, duh. (It won’t always be this easy for me and obvious for you, okay?)  Runner-up, if I had to guess that Javier Bardem was as badass as he was a few years later, and still is: Before Night Falls.  Not Tom Hanks, because he’s overrated.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

What, were you not entertained?

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

– What else was nominated?

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
102 Dalmatians
Quills

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

I’ve seen ’em all, save for Quills.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Gladiator, why not?  Runner-up, although I hate to say it, is Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  The movie is god-awful, but the costumes look…Who-ish.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

They were pretty sane.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

– What else was nominated?

Hollow Man
The Perfect Storm

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

The Perfect Storm.  Saw it.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

I was too bored by The Perfect Storm to notice the visuals, but I did watch it.  Do the math.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Well, Ridley Scott’s appreciation for action and drama is outstanding here, particularly with the well-edited, highly visceral action sequences.

BEST PICTURE

– What else was nominated?

Chocolat
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Erin Brockovich
Traffic

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

I’ve seen maybe fifteen, sixteen seconds of Erin Brockovich.  Oh and a dubbed version of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, though I’m not sure that last one counts, since it’s dubbed.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Gladiator.  Their mouths are in sync.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Well, I might say otherwise when I see TrafficChocolat, and all two hours of Erin Brockovich…but as of now, I’d say pretty sane.

BEST SOUND

– What else was nominated?

Cast Away
The Patriot
The Perfect Storm
U-571

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

Seen #2 and #3.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Listen to how Crowe’s voice echoes!  Then how Gibson’s does in The Patriot!

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Spot-on.

Other nominations:

Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joaquin Phoenix) [deserved]
Best Art Direction-Set Decoration [deserved]
Best Cinematography
Best Director (Ridley Scott)
Best Film Editing
Best Original Score
Best Original Screenplay
