Full list of Oscars won:

BEST DIRECTOR (CLINT EASTWOOD)

– What else was nominated?

The Aviator – Martin Scorsese
Ray – Taylor Hackford
Sideways – Alexander Payne
Vera Drake – Mike Leigh

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

I’ve seen ’em all but Vera Drake.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Martin Scorsese.  Fun fact: the Academy’s lack-of-mind toward him made him (for two years only, thank god!) one of three directors–alongside Hitchcock and Altman–to earn nominations for but not win for five Directing Oscars: Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People (Robert Redford); The Last Temptation of Christ lost to Rain Man (Barry Levinson); Goodfellas lost (by a lobotomy and a half) to Dances with Wolves (Kevin Costner); Gangs of New York lost (reasonably, I guess) to The Pianist (Roman Polanski); and The Aviator lost to Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood).  He also lost for Hugo to The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius), but only after winning a long-delayed Academy Award for The Departed.

When I originally wrote this post, I’d say Taylor Hackford for Ray.  For runner-up that is.  Now that I’ve seen Sideways, I’ll go with that, since Alexander Payne really shows, and I really don’t know who the hell Taylor Hackford is.  Apparently, he made his directorial debut on a documentary about the poet laureate Charles Bukowski, called Bukowski.  Remember the Bukowski lines in Sideways?

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Ha!  I’m only laughing ’cause I’m thinking of Jack Nicholson playing the Academy.  That’s the scene where he was lobotomized in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.  They’ve seen better days, even if he never got a chance to after that (sorry if I just spoiled the entire movie for the heretics out there).

Needless to say, they must’ve been in euphoric rage from Unforgiven, which also got Clint Eastwood an Oscar.  Though that one, my friends, was deserved.

SHOULD HAVE WON!

BEST PICTURE

– What else was nominated?

The Aviator
Finding Neverland
Ray
Sideways

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

Haven’t found Neverland yet.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

The Aviator, followed by Ray.  Followed by Sideways, and then assumedly Finding Neverland.  Oh look there’s Million Dollar Baby.  Miles…down.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Just as lobotomized as aforementioned, if not more.

SHOULD HAVE WON!

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (MORGAN FREEMAN)

– What else was nominated?

The Aviator – Alan Alda
Sideways – Thomas Haden Church
Collateral – Jamie Foxx
Closer – Clive Owen

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

The Aviator‘s the only one have I seen on this the list that lies above.  And, as of recent, Sideways.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Well, I did like Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby.  ‘Cause he’s Morgan Freeman.  Then I’ll go with Thomas Haden Church ’cause he delivered so nicely.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Perfectly sane.  He’s Morgan Freeman, people.

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE (HILARY SWANK)

– What else was nominated?

Being Julia – Annette Bening
Maria Full of Grace – Catalina Sandino Moreno
Vera Drake – Imelda Staunton
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – Kate Winslet

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

Ahh how I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Oh my darlin, oh my darlin, oh my darlin Clementine…Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  Now for the runner-up, I’ll just act as if Hilary Swank never tried on them Rockygloves, and I’ll assume that Annette Bening was great in Being Julia, as was she in American Beauty, five years before.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

HELL.  NO.

SHOULD HAVE WON!

Other nominations:

Best Film Editing
Best Actor in a Leading Role (Clint Eastwood)
Best Adapted Screenplay
