Full list of Oscars won:

BEST DIRECTORS (ETHAN COEN & JOEL COEN)

– What else was nominated?

There Will Be Blood – Paul Thomas Anderson
Michael Clayton – Tony Gilroy
Juno – Jason Reitman
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly – Julian Schnabel

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

I’ve seen There Will Be Blood and Juno.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Juno, while good, wasn’t worth a directing nomination.  The screenplay drove it, if anything.  There Will Be Blood was too boring for me at times, but be that as it may, P. T. Anderson had a lot to say with it.  So it’s runner-up to No Country for Old Men.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Spot-on.

BEST PICTURE

– What else was nominated?

Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
There Will Be Blood

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

Second, fourth, seen ’em.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

No Country for Old Men, followed by Juno.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Absolutely fine.  (What a surprise, two years in a row?)

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (JAVIER BARDEM)

– What else was nominated?

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – Casey Affleck
Charlie Wilson’s War – Philip Seymour Hoffman
Into the Wild – Hal Holbrook
Michael Clayton – Tom Wilkinson

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

I did indeed see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

I quote Dustin Hoffman: “Javier Bardem, definitely Javier Bardem.  After that, after that, after that.  Casey Affleck, definitely Casey Affleck.”  Yes Dustin, definitely.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Perfectly sane!  Thank god!

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

– What else was nominated?

Atonement
Away from Her
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
There Will Be Blood

– Which of the nominations have I seen and which have I not seen?

There Will Be Blood.  Saw it.

– Which deserved to win (first choice and runner-up)?

Well, There Will Be Blood was, for lack of a better word, interesting, but it was fraught with pacing errors.  So I go with, No Country for Old Men.

– How sane was the Academy when they handed this award over?

Oh they were sane all right.

Other nominations:

Best Cinematography [deserved]
Best Film Editing [deserved]
Best Sound Editing [deserved]
Best Sound Mixing [deserved]

Tomorrow

  1. 2007 was a pretty great year for film between NCFOM and There Will Be Blood. I’m not too big on Juno though. It was good but not exactly Oscar worthy. I thought Once or Zodiac was more deserving of a Best Picture nomination.
